  1. 01

On your phone, in a private window, search your main service and your town (“roof repair Matthews”). Are you in the three under the map?

  2. 02

Open your Google Business Profile. Does the main category name your trade the way a customer would search for it?

  3. 03

If customers never come to your address, is it hidden, with a service area set to the towns you really serve?

  4. 04

Does your website have its own page for each service you want calls for?

  5. 05

Search Google for site: and your domain (site:example.com). Is the count close to the number of pages on your site?

  6. 06

Are your business name, phone number and hours the same on Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp and your website?

  7. 07

Did new Google reviews come in last month?

  8. 08

Call your business line from another phone on a weekday morning, and let it ring out. Do you hear back within five minutes?

How to pick an SEO expert

How to pick an SEO expert in Charlotte, even if it's not us.

Google has a list of questions to ask anyone you might hire for SEO. Here are five of them, with our answers. Ask every expert you talk to. Google's full list ↗

What results do you expect, and how soon?
We tell you after the audit, in writing. No one can promise you a date or a #1 spot, and Google says to walk away from anyone who does.
How do you measure success?
By calls and booked jobs from search. Not by one ranking you check once a month.
What's your experience in my city?
We're based in Charlotte. The free audit shows what we know about your part of town before you pay anything.
How long have you done this?
6+ years in SEO roles (2016–2023). The numbers are above, with the case study.
Will you show me every change you make?
Yes. You see every change, and your accounts stay in your name.

Red flags: what we won't do

  • Promise you a ranking. In Google's own words, “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.”
  • Buy links, or sell you a pack of them. Google treats bought links as spam.
  • Pay for reviews, write them, or trade a discount for one.
  • Stuff keywords or a town name into your business name on Google. Google doesn't allow it, and it can suspend your profile.
  • Use a virtual office to fake a Charlotte address. Google says an address you don't work from can't have a profile.
  • Keep your accounts. Your Google profile, Search Console, Analytics and domain stay in your name.

Where the search ends

2,300+ trade contractors in Mecklenburg County. Three spots under the map.

That's the county's count of trade contractors alone (BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, Q1 2026). Someone with a leak in Ballantyne searches, looks, and calls one of the first few names. Those names come from three places.

The map
Search “plumber near me” and Google shows a map with three businesses under it. Those three come from Google Business Profiles. So most local SEO happens on the profile, not the website.
The results under it
Below the map, Google lists websites. A site that's fast on a phone and says what you do, and where, can earn a spot here. It also backs up what your profile says.
AI answers
Google's AI answers and ChatGPT answer “who should I call?” too. They read your site, your listings and your reviews. In one 2026 study, Yelp was ChatGPT's top local source. BrightLocal's study ↗

How the Charlotte map ranks

Why the map in Huntersville isn't the map in Pineville.

Google says three things decide who shows up in Google Maps. How well you match the search. How close you are. And how well known you are. Distance counts from where the searcher stands. So the top three in Huntersville aren't the top three in Pineville. No one can sell you “number one in Charlotte.”

You can't move your shop. But you can match more searches, and you can get better known. Google says your review count and rating help with that. That's where the work goes. Google's own explanation ↗

How to rank on Google Maps in Charlotte, step by step →

What we do

Local SEO, on your profile and in your site's code.

Your Google profile, set up right
A main category that names your trade the way people search for it. Your real service area, hours, services and photos of your own work. If customers never come to you, we hide your street address, as Google asks.
A page for each service you sell
“Water heater repair” and “drain cleaning” are two different searches. Each one gets its own page: what the job is, the towns you do it in, and how to book.
Town pages you've earned
Pages for the towns where you really take jobs, each with something true to say. Google calls copy-paste city pages “doorway abuse.” We don't build those.
Technical SEO, built into the site
Fast on a phone. One web address per page. A sitemap. Code that tells Google your business type, hours and service area. And nothing that blocks the bots behind search and AI answers.
Listings that match
We check your listings on Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp and the sites for your trade. We fix the ones you give us access to. When they don't match, people find old hours, and Google sees two of you.
Reviews from every job
Google says more reviews and better ratings can help you rank. The way to get them is to ask every customer, every time, with the same link. Review Request, an agent you can add at its own price, can send the ask by text.
AI search, covered by the same work
Your facts in plain words, your site open to the bots behind Google, Bing and ChatGPT, and listings that match. Google says its AI answers need nothing more than normal SEO. So we won't sell you an “AI SEO” add-on.
Kept up to date
Holiday hours, a new service, a new town. On a site we build, profile and page updates count toward the small updates (up to 2 hours a month) that come with it.

Where SEO pays off

A ranking only pays if someone picks up.

Most local searches end in a call, often from someone who needs help today. If no one picks up, they tap the next name. So every site we build comes with one agent (Missed-Call Text Back or Support & FAQ Chat).

With Missed-Call Text Back, a caller who hangs up gets a text in seconds. One who leaves a voicemail gets a reply to what they said. Calls after 8 pm get their text at 8 am. How Missed-Call Text Back works →

After the audit

You decide what gets fixed, and who fixes it.

You can fix some of what the audit finds yourself, and it tells you which. For the rest, we quote the work before anything starts. That might be tech fixes, a profile cleanup, or new service and town pages. Or a new site that keeps the rankings you've earned.

Need a new website anyway? The local SEO basics come with every site we build: the profile setup, the service and town pages, the code and the listings check. Charlotte web design →

Straight answers

What owners ask a Charlotte SEO expert.

What's in the free SEO audit?

We look at your Google profile, website and listings. We also check where you show up for your main service in the towns you work. Then we email you what's holding you back and what we'd fix first. It's free, and it's yours to keep. All we ask for is your website, your email and your phone number.

How much does SEO cost in Charlotte?

It depends on what your site and profile need. The free audit finds that out. Some fixes you can make yourself, and the audit says which. We quote any work before it starts. If we build your website, the local SEO basics come with it. For what Charlotte agencies charge, see our guide to what a marketing agency costs in Charlotte.

What does a Charlotte SEO expert do?

For a local business, four jobs. Set up and keep up your Google Business Profile. Make your website easy for Google to read. Get your listings to match. And keep reviews coming in. A good one also tells you what isn't worth paying for.

How do I choose an SEO expert in Charlotte?

Ask what results they expect and how soon, how they measure success, and if you'll see every change. Google lists these questions too. Walk away from anyone who guarantees a #1 spot, sells packs of links, or wants your accounts in their name.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Some fixes count as soon as Google sees them, like a wrong category, a missing service page, or a page Google couldn't find. Reviews and trust build over months. Anyone who gives you a sure date is guessing.

Can you guarantee first page on Google?

No. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and to find someone else if they do. Local results also depend on where the searcher is standing. What we can promise is the work: the profile, the pages and the fixes, done right and shown to you.

Do I need a new website to rank?

Not always. If your site is fast on a phone, has a page for each service, and Google can find it, we can work with it. If it's slow, thin, or built in a way Google can't read, a new site can cost less than fixing the old one. We'll tell you which after we look.

Local SEO or regular SEO: which do I need?

If your customers are within driving distance, local: the map, your profile, and pages for your services and towns. Regular SEO matters more when you sell across the state or the country. Most Charlotte service businesses need local first.

My business is in Fort Mill (or Concord, or Gastonia). Can I rank in Charlotte?

In the map, distance counts, so you'll show up most for people near you. A virtual office in Charlotte won't fix that. Google says an address you don't work from can't have a profile. What works: a service area set to where you really go, pages for the towns you work, and reviews from customers there.

Will my business show up in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers?

No one controls what an AI says. Google says its AI answers need nothing beyond normal SEO. ChatGPT search needs your site open to its bot. Clear facts on your site, a current profile, listings that match and steady reviews are your best case with all of them.

Do I keep my Google Business Profile and accounts?

Yes. Your profile, Search Console, Analytics and domain stay in your name. We work in them with access you give us and can take away.

Do you only work with businesses in Charlotte?

No. We're based in Charlotte, and most of our work is across the metro, NC and SC. Calls, approvals and updates happen by phone and email, so a business farther away works the same way.

A note from Nick

One Charlotte small business to another.

You built a business people trust. That took years. No website did that part. You did.

Before I wrote a line of code, I spent five years selling door to door. At 24, I built a sales company to $1.2M+ in a single year. Today I run a small business of my own, here in Charlotte.

On the call, I'll ask what you'd fix first. You know your customers better than any report does. If your site and profile already work, I'll tell you so.
